Spring Lawn Care Steps

Spring Lawn Care Steps
In this post, we’ll discuss the spring lawn care steps you can take now to help your lawn recover from winter and gain strength for a healthy summer.
When winter finally ends (it will, even though sometimes it feels like it never does), it’s time to start thinking about your lawn again so it will look its best this summer.
Your lawn needs extra attention and care in the spring so that it can recover from the tough midwestern winter. It’s been through a lot, is still experiencing extreme swings in temperature, the soil is spongy, and the roots are weak.
Below you can learn how to get your lawn healthy in the spring. Please note that these steps are for a generally healthy lawn. If your lawn is extremely patchy and weedy, please contact us for a personalized lawn care program.

Spring lawn care steps

  • Lawn cleanup
  • Re-seed bare patches
  • Tune-up your mower
  • Mow to the correct length
  • Do edging on your flower beds
  • Plan your fertilization schedule
  • Fertilize with a slow release granular fertilizer
  • Apply a pre-emergent weed controller

Lawn cleanup

fall, leaves, fall care, aeration, overseeding
Your lawn needs a light cleanup and raking early in the spring. Once the turf has thawed out, your lawn should be raked to remove leaves and debris that accumulated over winter or that has blown into your yard. Rake lightly so that your grass will be left standing up, but not so hard that you pull up any chunks or turf that may still be weak. It gets some air flow into your turf and will help protect against snow mold.

Re-seed bare patches

The best time of the year for overseeding the lawn is in the fall, but that doesn’t mean you can’t reseed your lawn in the spring. Sometimes your lawn develops patchy spots after the winter and these need to be refilled with new grass seed. If you don’t, then that’s an opening for weeds to seed themselves into those spots and begin spreading across your lawn.

Inspect and tune-up all your outdoor tools, especially your lawn mower. You want your mower to be running well and have sharp mower blades because it will give your lawn a healthier cut. This will be especially important in the spring when your lawn isn’t at full strength.

Mow to the correct length

The correct length to mow your grass can vary dependent on the variety of grass in your yard. Here in northern Illinois, cool season varieties of grass do best. The most important thing is to not cut your grass too short. The first cut of the year can shock your grass if you cut it real short, which can cause it to not grow strong root systems. When you cut the first time, make sure not to cut more than 1/3 of the grass blade away.

Do edging on your flower beds

Your soil is soft and moist in the spring, making the edging of your flower beds easy. Use a garden spade to cut a 2- to 3-inch deep, V-shaped trench around your beds to keep grass out.

Lesco FertilizerPlan your fertilization schedule

A well-rounded lawn care program will keep your lawn looking great all year long from spring to fall. At Green T, we use a 7-step lawn care program. If you’re the DIY type and have a lot of time on your hands for lawn work, then spring is the time to plan out all of your steps for the rest of the year. You will need to plan multiple fertilizations and plan for different rounds of weed control. Don’t forget to plan an aeration and overseeding for in the fall.

Fertilize with a slow release granular fertilizer

The most effective fertilizer to apply in early spring is slow release, high nitrogen granular fertilizer. Granular fertilizer is best because its slow release prevents over fertilization and it is safe for people and pets after application with no drying time. This gives your lawn it’s crucial nutrients for growth and recovery without shocking the lawn by using a full fertilizer application.

In addition to using the correct fertilization methods in the spring, you can also apply a pre-emergent weed control to prevent annual weeds such as crabgrass from ever taking root in your lawn. Consult the directions on your weed control for proper timing and amounts.

In this post, we discuss the main benefits of lawn fertilization so that you can understand how regular and well-planned fertilization can help transform your lawn beyond expectations.

Some people are almost obsessive about their lawns, working hard to maintain a lawn care schedule, fight weeds, and mowing their lawn with precision.

Others take a more “let nature take it’s course” kind of view of their lawn. They may try and care for their lawn by keeping it clean and mowed but don’t take any extra steps such as doing lawn fertilization.

Having your kids playing on your healthy lawn provides happiness for you and for them. Your properly fertilized lawn will also be able to recover from play and heavy usage much more easily.

Walking across your healthy lawn during the summer with bare feet through the grass, that’s a priceless feeling that you can only get a few times a year and that you can only get from an extremely healthy lawn.

Professional lawn care for your family home

There are things you can put a price on though. Ask any realtor if a healthy, thick lawn adds value to a home. Ask them how much a patchy, weed-filled lawn takes off from the price of a home. They can tell you exactly which home will sell faster and for more money.

The maintenance and curb appeal of your property makes a big difference. It’s not even just your home! Well maintained lawns help make your neighbors home values go up as well.
